Sound Reinforcement - Sound Masking

A sound masking system emits low-level, non-distracting masking noise designed to reduce speech intelligibility and thereby improve speech privacy.  Sound Masking is effective in environments requiring speech isolation when dealing with confidentiality related issues involving employees, clients, patient’s, business owners and customers.

Typical Applications

sound maskingImproving speech privacy can be beneficial for open-plan office areas, court rooms, medical examination rooms, emergency departments, attorney offices, school and marriage counselors, conference rooms, administrative offices, law enforcement personnel, directors of human resource.

Productivity

sound maskingWithout sound masking, people must deal with constant audible distractions ranging from office machinery to overheard conversations from private offices and adjacent work stations.  With sound masking, background noises become less irritating and the dialogue, while still audible, will be unintelligible and therefore less of a distraction.  Noises created by nearby distractions can limit productivity.  With a properly designed and installed sound masking system, employee productivity can increase.

Sound Masking Equipment

sound maskingA standard sound masking system consists of a masking noise generator, equalizer, amplifier(s) and a number of masking speakers installed above the ceiling throughout the plenum space.  The number of masking speakers installed is based on the depth of the plenum space, height differential between floor and ceiling, and the intended area of coverage.  Masking speakers face upward towards the plenum deck.  The sound reflects off the deck, and then penetrates downward through the ceiling tile and into the space below.

Paging and Background Music

Paging and background music can be integrated within a sound masking system by using the same masking speakers for all three purposes.  We recommend using a separate equalizer for the music input so it sounds natural after penetrating the acoustical ceiling.  Paging requires a higher sound level than either masking or music.  The sound masking, paging and background music input levels can be individually adjusted from the pre-amp of digital signal processor.
